Food Waste

Hey everyone, today I want to talk about one of the biggest problem of the world which is Food Waste.

We all know and hear about it somehow but do we really know how bad the situation is? Do we know how it affect millions of people? And most importantly, do we know that we can stop it?

Let's start with numbers;

  • An estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally each year, one third of all food produced for human consumption, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
  • In the United States 30 per cent of all food, worth US$48.3 billion (€32.5 billion), is thrown away each year. The food currently lost or wasted in Latin America could feed 300 million people.
  • United Kingdom households waste an estimated 6.7 million tonnes of food every year, around one-third of the 21.7 million tonnes purchased. The food currently wasted in Europe could feed 200 million people.

And there is still other countries that we don't count with these numbers. Can you imagine the whole picture now?

Every little bit of food that we waste and we think just a little bit will be okay, can sum up and gives us BILLION TONNES of number.

Now, I want you to imagine all those people who are dying because of hunger all around the world. While we waste an amount of food that can literally save all the people's lives who are dying because lack of food, why hunger is still one of the biggest problem in the world?

I love food like most of you! I love to go bufeet sometime and eat as much as I want. I love to have a big dinner with my husband or friends. And I am not telling anyone to stop enjoying their food BUT it is time to think twice when we throw away food or buy lots of groceries that we are not going to be able to eat all. It is time to be less selfish and be more careful and thoughtful with other peoples lives.

What Can Be Done?

What can be done? Let's start with taking little steps together for instance;

  • Be careful with amount of food while you are at your grocery shop. You always can go back and buy again. Better to go shopping every week or every couple days then not be able eat  them all and throw away.
  • Use leftover foods. Eat your leftovers the other day, food will be good up to 4 days if it will store in right conditions. Or use your leftovers to create different meal. You can make new recipes with whatever you have in your fridge easily check my Easy Frozen Fries Meal, Chicken Slow Cooker With Vegetables, Chicken Mushroom Casserole or How To Use Leftovers recipes to get some ideas. And if you have recipes to use leftovers let us know on the comments! Knowledge is better when you share!
  • We always can help others. How? It is easy, we still can buy same amount of grocery then check and decide how much do we really need and give some of them to another person that you know he/she needs food. Sharing is a beautiful thing! Making someone happy is always easy! Share some love and food!!
  • Freeze your leftovers, vegetables or fruits that are going bad or you can not eat right then. Freezing is such a good idea that can save us from wasting lots of food. Many vegetables and fruits are good in the freezer for months! They wont taste same but you always can use to make some shake, smoothie bowl or anything like that. Cooked food can be good mostly up to 2 to 3 month in the freezer. Also, sometimes it is just lifesaver to do that. For example, if you are a busy person when you cook rice cook little more than you need and put into freezer. This way can be used with many other food too! Later on whenever you need just pop up from freezer to oven, microwave or thaw in the room temperature.

At Last;

This is just a beginning of this topic. Will sure share some more information later on with you all! There is many more to learn and discuss together! Let me know your opinion about this topic and share with us your ideas about reducing the number of food waste and saving lives!
